Short Story

#Letsmakeshithappen is an attempt to unbuild systems that hold back artists who identify as minority, and to raise money for artists to experience and create work with full autonomy.

The goal is to raise £50,000 to enable four artists to freely make work, unrestricted by industry expectations. This new approach will restore power to the artistic community rather than to funding organisations.

Campaign Story

#LETSMAKESHITHAPPEN

Bypassing old and creating new Structures / Valerie Ebuwa

Why we need to make shit happen.

#Letsmakeshithappen recognises that artists should be given the opportunity to express themselves without having to achieve any cookie cutter or conditioned expectation of what “good” is. We need to acknowledge that ideas of “good” within art institutions and art communities are often convoluted and based on conditioned (colonial, capitalist) ideas.

“Shit” work needs to exist and there seems to be no room that allows time for play, experimentation or failure (which ultimately leads to success) to be a part of the minority narrative. Rather than relying on institutions which are inherently capitalist, patriarchal and racist, #letsmakeshithappen provides a fresh alternative to make more stories and opportunities visible and heard.

The arts sector in its current state seems not to be designed to support individual and freelance artists, as that would require more work for the top organisational funding bodies to make artistic decisions. Instead, it is easier for them to funnel funding into large art companies and thus delegate the work of artistic direction – and the formation of our shared cultural landscape – to these groups. This means that many artists are constrained by trying to meet the expectations of these organisations in order to get funding.

What is #letsmakeshithappen?

#Letsmakeshithappen is the attempt to unbuild systems and raise money for artists to experience and create work with full autonomy. Now more than ever artists need to cultivate an ecosystem that is self reliant rather than trying to fulfil the expectation of institutions in order to receive financial funding and opportunities for artistic expression.

In place of and as well as continuously trying to change and battle with systems that are inherently prejudice and flawed, #letsmakeshithappen is an attempt to trial a possible solution to this problem by asking the artistic community to invest directly in the work of freelance artists who are currently experiencing disadvantages based on their race, gender identity, sexual orientation or perceived ableism. Bypassing the institutions could enable us to restore power within our own artistic community. Essentially we could be the OUTstitution.

#Letsmakeshithappen is therefore proposing a new approach: (crowd)fund artists directly to restore power within the artistic community and build new systems of validation and appreciation to support artistic work especially work by artists who are currently experiencing disadvantages based on their race, gender identity, sexual orientation or perceived ableism. By giving money to #Letsmakeshithappen you will encourage artists who are already facing multiple barriers to create their work, to trust themselves and be themselves rather than having to explain themselves over and over again.

#Letsmakeshithappen aims to raise £50,000 to support artists, to diversify the art world, to unbuild and overcome institutional systems.

How shit is going to happen:

Step 1 – raise £10.000 for Valerie Ebuwa’s Project ValUE (Valerie Uchechukwu Ebuwa) which looks at the black female nude and why it’s evidently less represented throughout the history of art. The project provides a fundamental research for the greater goal of #Letsmakeshithappen as well as Valerie’s work as a Dancer, Artist, Activist and writer. Valerie has been working on the ValUE project for more than a year without any funding and is currently facing additional challenges in her work as a Dancer due to the COVID 19 Crisis. On top of the already difficult situation of being a Dancer during COVID 19 she recently had to face various discriminations from art institutions that had ensured her to fund, support or show the ValUE project. Since Valerie is the Founder and Mastermind of #letsmakeshithappen it is necessary that she is able to work and live in order to start making shit happen.

Step 2 – raise 3 x £10.000 to give to three artists chosen by Valerie so they can work with full creative autonomy on their projects. Valerie has chosen three artists she knows personally and therefore knows about the various struggles they are facing within their work and existence as artists of color. They need our support and encouragement rather than being forced to explain and prove their validity as an artist once again. So Valerie has decided to not name them publicly here and instead making shit happen by focussing on supporting their work rather than discussing their identities or personal struggles.

Step 3 – raise £10.000 to invest in making shit happen. This £10.000 will ensure that #letsmakeshithappen will become a continuous movement. Valerie will create a pack of resources (books, podcasts, interviews, literature, articles), workshops, keynotes and panels with a team of artists working across the arts to enable the artists funded through #letsmakeshithappen with the tools to actually make their shit happen.

The Experience of Valerie as well as the three artists who will be supported (Step 2) will serve to develop a sustainable support structure to strengthen artists who identify as minority so they can create their work with full autonomy. Valerie’s ultimate Goal for the Tools and structures developed in this step is that they can also be used by people around the world (institutions, artists, galleries, dance companies…) to make shit happen and bring down institutional barriers.

Step 3 builds on steps 1 and 2 and is the most fundamental step to make sure shit is happening in the long run. Because we all need to remember: this is a marathon not a sprint.

Who is behind #letsmakeshithappen?

Valerie Ebuwa started the project in response to the art world’s excessive talk about what constitutes quality or fundable work as well as her many tiring experiences in battling systemic racism and sexism while trying to create her own work and working with other artists in various art institutions, dance companies and universities.

Valerie is a freelance dance artist, activist, writer and model based in London. She started her training at Lewisham College before obtaining a BA HONS degree from London Contemporary Dance School. Amongst others she’s recently worked with: Vincent Dance Theatre, Clod Ensemble, Eddie Peake, Protein Dance, Holly Blakey and Rhiannon Faith.

As a maker, she has choreographed and created Body Data, CTRL+V and Down Bad / How do you wanna go out? As well as her blog and casual work for The Stage Magazine, Valerie writes for I am Hip Hop magazine, a printed and online publication championing Hip Hop culture. Her work has been featured in Crack Magazine and i-D.
